How to choose a sofa for a city apartment

A sofa is often the largest thing that has to turn a corner in an apartment building. Measure the elevator, the stair landing, and the doorway before you measure the wall. A piece that looks perfect online still has to arrive in one path.

Seat depth matters as much as length. A deep cloud sofa feels generous in a wide living room and cramped in a narrow one, because your knees need space in front of the coffee table. If the table would land inside the seat zone, choose a shallower frame.

Performance fabrics earn their keep in a city home. Look for a tight weave you can spot clean, and ask whether the cover can be professionally cleaned. Leather is easier to wipe and shows more of daily life.

Furnivora lists the width, depth, and height on every sofa page so you can tape the footprint on the floor before you order. If the tape box feels tight, size down. A sofa that can breathe looks more expensive than one that fills the wall edge to edge.
