Lighting layers that finish a room

Overhead light alone flattens a room. Add a lower source, such as a table lamp, and a mid source, such as a floor lamp behind a chair. The mix lets you turn the ceiling light off after dinner.
Shades do as much work as bulbs. A linen drum softens the pool of light. A metal dome aims light down onto a table. Match the shade to the job, not only to the finish of the base.
Warm bulbs, around 2700K, keep wood and skin tones friendly. Cool bulbs can make a white room feel clinical. Use the same temperature in one room so the corners agree.
Hang a dining pendant so the bottom sits about 30 to 36 inches above the table. In a taller room, stay closer to 36. People should see each other, not the inside of the shade.
